Atoll Mezzanine

     I started and finished this early this morning, right after posting my previous piece (10/28/2014).  The reference I used here was from a photo I save from Savanna Stern’s twitter feed.  The background is some random beach front property I found on google search.

     I finished this one late in the morning (10/27/2014).  It started with a picture of Muhammad Ali fighting George Foreman, a still photo I found of him catching Foreman in the face.  Even before I got started, I knew I didn’t want a boxing picture, even though I was using a boxing reference.  From here, I found references of southern slaves, a Klansman, and a plantation home.  Then, I looked up photos of a burning plantation, and that gave me the pic you see here.  As always, available for purchase at the following sites;

Oppidan Succor

     I left a picture comment on someone’s Facebook update a week or so back, using a funny picture.  I tend to do that mostly to keep the mood even cool in Facebook threads.  But the picture I used was of a guy giving a thumbs up, and for some reason, that became the inspiration for this piece.  I took that picture as reference, then decided he needed to be standing next to a car to step into.  Then the lady in the back seat, and the compact city structure behind them.  All this stuff was just thought of randomly as I went along, which is not how I normally illustrate.  Normally, I have a detailed plan, from start to finish, and I know exactly where I’m headed, from line to line.  But this worked out pretty good regardless.  Well, as always, you can buy a print of this at the following stores;

     FINALLY! FINALLY!  I started this I think maybe three weeks back, and I’m FINALLY just now getting it finished (10/12/2014).  This is another of the pieces of fan art I’ve been doing recently.  What originally sparked this one was me remembering the box cover of King Kong vs. Godzilla.  They were standing face to face with a building in between them if I remember correctly.
     My first crack at this was actually something that had Bowser & Kong destroying the Mushroom Kingdom together.  But once I’d finished, I didn’t like how it came out; the proportions didn’t display the size of them relative to Toadstool Castle like I’d wanted.  So, I scrapped it and started again.
     The second attempt was one where they where standing off, similar to the Kong/Godzilla box cover that inspired the piece to begin with.  This on e came out better than the first, but still had the same problems.  Boswer & Kong just didn’t look big enough to me in relation to the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom, especially Toadstool Castle.  So again, that one was scrapped too.
     At this point, I was ready to give up.  It just seemed that I wasn’t going to be able to pull this off.  But it kept nagging at me and effecting my mood, so I decided to try again.  This time, I broadened the scope of my inspirations.  I started looking up images of Kaiju battles, and Kaijus in general.  Then I started looking up “Pacific Rim” stuff, and that really got me back into trying again.  But this time, I wanted the two actually battling, instead of posing like I’d done before.  And so, I also looked up pictures of Sumo Wrestlers, and used a lot of those for reference.
     So, this time, with all my new inspirations as to what I’m drawing, I give it a third try.  Everything turned out great, except for one thing, to much Bowser, not enough Kong.  Bowser is basically tackling Kong onto Toadstool Castle, but that has Kong being covered by Bowser and parts of the castle.  Everything else was fine, but that really bothered me, with Bowser getting all the attention basically.  So, I scrapped again and started over.
     With all the inspirations & references from before, I started again, but this time, I basically visualized what I wanted immediately, which is what you see here.  Bowser & Kong fighting in the Mushroom Kingdom, with Toadstool Castle in the background, giving you a larger sense of proportion.  The idea is that they are so large, if they stranded next to the castle, they might actually be taller than it.  And so now, I have my Nintendo inspired Kaiju fan art.  As always, stores listed at the bottom with original prints.

     Started this sometime last week, and finished it earlier this week (09/14/2014 - 09/20/2014).  This is another one of those pieces I’ve been wanting to do, but just now got around to it.  For Seymour, I used a reference of a man watering flowers in a garden, and for Audrey II, a shark’s open mouth.  I realized afterwards that it looks like a snake, but hey, what’re you gonna do.  For Muchnic & Audrey, those were completely freehand, as was the background used in the piece.  I had originally done flowers that would litter parts of the store, but later decided against adding those.  The tracks used in this video are from the film’s soundtrack.  They are as follows;
Prologue
Grow For Me
Feed Me
Suppertime
Mean Green Mother From Outerspace
Don’t Feed The Plants
As always, store links at the bottom.
